The Illusion of Progress | Genesis 4:17-26

On Sunday, 21 April Pastor Craig Baxter continued the series 'Genesis: God's Unveiling Plan of Redemption and Blessing' with 'The Illusion of Progress' from Genesis 4:17-26.

Our passage contrasts two seeds: the unrighteous seed of Cain and the righteous seed of Seth. The narrator provides us with a picture of the predominant theme of each lineage. While Cain’s lineage was remembered for technological advancements this was overshadowed by great moral depravity. In contrast little is said about Seth’s line, but what is stated is far greater indeed. They were remembered as a people who called upon the name of the Lord in faith and dependence. In this lesson we learn that true, lasting progress in this world is determined by the name we seek to advance.

The illusion of progress (vv. 17-24)

  1. They seek stability and permanence in themselves (v. 17)
  2. They see progress as their highest goal (vv. 18-22)
  3. They glory in evil (vv. 23-24)

The reality of progress (vv. 25-26)

  1. Trust in God’s promises (v. 25)
  2. Acknowledge man’s frailty (v. 26a)
  3. Proclaim God’s name (v. 26b)
